Greenway Trail

Greenway trail map

The Greenway Trail connects the Otway Ski Center with the Blue Spruce Campground on Highway 16 West. The Greenway is accessed from Otway by following 2.2km of the existing Otway Ski Center Trails. The distance between Otway and Forests for the World is 17.2km; between Forests For the World and UNBC, .8 km; between UNBC and the Blue Spruce Campground, 6 km; if UNBC is bypassed the distance between the Blue Spruce Campground and Otway is 21.7km.

In November 1994 the Cranbrook Hill Trail Task Group was formed. Initial planning began and the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Proposal was presented to BC Lands, the City of Prince George and the Fraser Fort George Regional District in June 1995. In October 1995 the task group disbanded and the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Society was formed. The Society then signed an agreement with the City of Prince George for the development and management of the Cranbrook Hill Greenway. Since that time, the boundaries of the Greenway and trail have been marked and a report has been written outlining Greenway development and management plans. In October 1996 a demonstration section of the greenway linking UNBC to Forests for the World was developed and an accurate map of the Greenway was produced. In 1997 the society received a substantial Forest Renewal BC grant which enabled the hiring of crews that cleared a right-of-way for recreational activities throughout the entire Greenway. The trail is cleared to a width of 12 feet between the Blue Spruce Campground and UNBC, and to a width of 10 feet between UNBC and Otway. The trail clearing was able to be completed in 1997 as a result of a donation from the New Caledonia Rotary Club--resulting in a 3.0km stretch of the Greenway being named the Rotary Connector. In addition some boardwalks, signs and trail markers have been installed. The Greenway Trail should be useable for the 1997/98 winter season.

1998 Update

An FRBC grant kept 2 supervisors and a crew of six busy for approximately 20 weeks. The work was mainly comprised of stump grinding, root and rock removal. The 1 km stretch from UNBC to FFTW was beautifully manicured into shape, with Geo-Tech(cloth) and hard packed gravel 1.25 meters wide. Cat work was done on various "grunt" sections where a lot of earth had to be moved. The 6km from UNBC to Blue Spruce Campsite is now finished, with nice rock work and culverts. Steel gates have been installed to keep the 4X4's out at the Blue Spruce end, UNBC, and Takla Rd.(north & south). All bridges, boardwalks, and culverts are in place with the exception of a boardwalk through the swamp on Takla North. Other work included improving the parking lot at UNBC; distance signs installed every kilometer; and an E-Team crew (hand tools only) working on fine tuning the Takla North section and the Rotary Connector.
