Jackrabbits - Fall and Winter

For ages 8-9 (born 2007 and 2008)

Come and kick start the Jackrabbit Fall and Winter season with some fall dryland activities. This is a great program to prepare your skier for Track Attack or Biathlon Bears for when they are of age. This program is offered to skiers ages 8 and 9 who will enjoy an enhanced Jackrabbit experience based on twice weekly sessions starting before the snow is on the ground. The focus will be on general and ski specific modes of travel like ski bounding, running, hiking, general body weight introduction to “strength” with 100% focus on introducing good movement patterns, and to play in our new terrain park which will give skiers a chance to test their balance, coordination, and speed through 10 stations of fun!

Our time in the FALL will be spent running/bounding/hiking and moving like animals exploring the ski and mountain bike trails on foot, looking for adventure. Playing games to develop speed, power, endurance and develop throwing, catching, jumping skills is also important. Each practice will involve stretching (flexibility) so as to establish some important patterns early in their active lives. The extra sessions these skiers receive in the fall will show in their abilities and fitness allowing them to venture into more challenging terrain, gain some information and opportunities around racing at local and regional races.

Through the WINTER, skiers will continue to develop their classic techniques on varied terrain, but will be introduced to Skate skiing as well. Parents and skiers will learn some basic waxing techniques and strategies through a waxing clinic and race experiences.

A 2 day per week program, starting in the fall, allows for much needed time on grass and snow with coaches, to practice and really improve their abilities, fitness, relationships with friends and learn to LOVE this great sport. The 2-day program also aligns with the Cross Country Canada program. We hope you will find the extra time in your schedule and see the value in spending another night at Otway in this fall and winter program. We strongly encourage parents to come and participate along with your skiers. It is a great time to learn along side your child and build some family ski friends for life.

The athletes will be divided into groups based on age and skill level.

Fundraising and Volunteering:

The success of this program hinges on volunteer coaches and parent help in a variety of disciplines. For every child registered in the program, there is a need for volunteer help from at least one parent.  Parents are encouraged to find a volunteer role that best suits their schedule, interest and abilities. The club requires both new and experienced coaches at various levels, so if you are interested in coaching and don’t want to coach your own child, that’s not a problem. We’ll help you find a suitable coaching role. The club provides coach training, and you provide your time and knowledge to develop future athletes. If you would prefer a volunteer task that does not involve coaching, fantastic! We’ve got tasks for you. Please complete the volunteer section on the Zone4 registration to identify your interests.

The 2016-2017 season brings the need to fundraise in order to support programs. A fundraising policy is currently under development. More information will be distributed once the policy is finalized. If you would like to be involved in coordinating fundraising activities, please send an e-mail expressing your interest to programs@caledonianordic.com
