CNSC Trails Committee Update

The CNSC Board of Directors has tasked the Trails Committee to come up with options to relocate the biathlon range in order to conform with current provincial/national biathlon standards (part of which requires the range to be within a specific distance of access and services (i.e. power, communications/internet). To provide some historical context to this, the CNSC Board adopted the CNSC Strategic Objective Action Plan in February 2006 of which one of the top priorities was to relocate the biathlon range. Shortly after that time, new tenure was secured and preliminary plans were drafted in order to solicit and leverage funding (Legacies Now/Live Sites, City of Prince George). While the funding was not successful at that time, the relocation of the range is still an outstanding item for the club in order to meet current standards and allow us to promote and encourage the Nordic sport of biathlon.

In assessing options for relocation, the guiding principles for the Trails Committee is to look for solutions that provide the greatest benefit for the entire membership as well as meeting the direct objective provided by the executive (i.e. relocating the range). Another opportunity this presents is to better integrate biathlon and cross country facilities to avoid or minimize the need to construct and maintain separate stadiums, trails and facilities (e.g. technical buildings, athlete facilities, storage, spectator areas, parking, etc). This opportunity for integration also provides the ability to significantly reduce additional "footprint".

Various ideas and options for relocation of the biathlon facility have been presented and discussed amongst the Trails Committee (augmented by some preliminary membership feedback). These options have been mapped out and there will be an opportunity for members to view, discuss and provide feedback on the various options  at the open house Nov. 6.  You may also view the maps at the following links:

It is important to recognize that any of the options to relocate the biathlon facility will have both pros and cons and undeniably have some impact, but our ultimate goal is to minimize this impact as much as possible, and to look for opportunities that can provide added benefit to the entire membership and help us achieve our overall vision of promoting all of our Nordic sports in a way that is truly inspiring.
